Beowulf Imitative Boast
Assignment #4: Creative Writing Piece
Points Value: 100
Due Date: In class Wednesday, Sept. 5th; typed; MLA Heading (10% off each day late/Zero after Friday, 9/7 at 2:00 P.M.)
Beowulf boasts of his accomplishments to Hrothgar, the King of the Danes in order to prove that he is worthy of the task at hand. Write a 30-line boast to be presented in class the week of September 10. (***There is a separate presentation grade.) To whom are you boasting and what is your purpose? Revisit his boast in lines 399-455 to imitate form and style (remember to number your lines – it is a poem).
Keep in mind Beowulf’s use of 1st person, how he establishes his credibility, the many details he provides, and how he compliments Hrothgar – this blend of persuasive appeals is quite effective and lands Beowulf the job. Here are some possible situations:
- College application board
- Job application/resume
- Persuading (parent?) someone to let you do something, have something (keep it appropriate for school)
- Asking someone out on a date (again, keep it appropriate!)
- Why you should be on a team, in NHS, etc…
The following are the additional requirements:
