Quotations (cited)
Beowulf #5 The captain of evil discovered himself in a handgrip harder than anything he had ever encountered in any man on the face of the earth. Every bone in his body quailed and recoiled, but he could not escape. (Heaney 749-753) |
Analysis
Grendel is the “captain of evil” – an epithet. Grendel faces a strength like no other, seemingly otherworldly (…on the face of the earth). Diction such as “quail and recoil” indicates fright and panic. In addition, the repetition of the consonant sound creates a strong image of the fear the monster is experiencing, as he tries to make himself smaller so he can escape the hero’s grip. Ironic, considering Grendel’s strength and size. |
